About Me

My name is Marc Truyens and I live in South Somerset in the salubrious South West of England, close to the beautiful Jurasic coast and not too far from Bath and Glastonbury. I moved to Scotland from Belgium shortly after 2000, and then to the South West of England after completing my qualification in career guidance in Nottingham. I spent different parts of my life in Switzerland, Belgium, France, Germany, Scotland and England and have good experience of a wide variety of cultural backgrounds as a result. Apart from offering support to international students, I work full time as a career adviser.

My previous experience:

I am an experienced and highly qualified career adviser who has been working with secondary school leavers and Sixth Formers applying to University since 2003, and with adults since 2011.

I have considerable experience helping people make decisions on their educational and career planning. My work involves supporting clients applying to university and other opportunities as well as exploring the education system, courses, universities and outcomes. In addition, I support adults in with their employability skills and progression into work after finishing their education. I also assess students, graduates and other clients as to their interests and needs, including those with special and additional needs. I follow up and supported clients’ interests longer term by contacting universities and other parties on their behalf and helping them build a strong personal statement and application.

My qualifications:

I have an open degree in art history and sociology, a postgraduate certificate in Professional Studies in Education (Guidance and Counseling in Learning) as well as the QCG (Qualification in Career Guidance), all from UK universities. I also achieved an NVQ4 LDSS (Learning Development and Support Services). Apart from the qualifications above, I also completed numerous shorter courses amongst which a certificate in Basic Counselling Skills; BAPC accredited. I am currently preparing research as part of an MSc in career guidance.

Me as a professional:

I am generally described as professional and very proactive in how I support clients. I have a real interest in clients’ progression and planning, but also in the world of work and education. I am known for going over and above what is normally expected. I have a particular interest in career guidance, career progression and employability support in higher education.

How I work:

I am a conference member of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) and a full member of the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG) and I abide by their code of ethics. I work in an independent, non-judgemental and confidential way. I will never tell you what you have to do; my main task consists of supporting, reflecting back and advising on your decisions. I will not judge you in any way and any support will be focused on you, your situation, interests, talents and abilities.
